Was ist Mitaan bitte?

with 2 comments

With so many Abhay Patils becoming internet-literate, it is getting harder by the day  to get an account without adding a modifier to the name!  Gmail was different – a colleague joined Google and I got a perfect address in those days of “by invitation only” gmail.  Anyway, I am happy with my modified account name as I get started with blogging.

Fetish for languages has always been there – but I have never been able to rise to be a polyglot!  So what’s the deal on Mitaan (मितान) ?  First – it is my younger son’s name.  The theater group we formed, just out of college, was named thus. Our first, and only, production won first place in an one-act play competition way back in the early eighties.  It is a Chaattisgarhi word meaning “friend”.  And,  I was overwhelmed when I learnt this, this was the name of the newsletter of the legendary Shankar Guha Niyogi’s Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha! Oh, it also happens to be a legal word in Finnish – thank god, it means something like anything or nothing!
